The Practical Side of AI: Crafting a Text-Based Game with ChatGPT
In the realm of game development, there's no shortage of challenges. When I set out to create a python-driven AI assistant for tabletop gaming, I was fully aware of the complexities ahead. The vision was ambitious: an AI that could replace the traditional dungeon master role, allowing them to participate as a player. But every ambitious project needs a practical approach.
Why ChatGPT?
The task at hand was daunting. I needed a detailed project and implementation plan before I really got into writing code. With limited experience in game development, I had two choices: either spend hours researching or leverage a tool to streamline the process. That's where ChatGPT came into the picture. I had previously used it for various tasks, and its capabilities with OpenAI's API made it a logical choice for generating in-game content.
The Development Experience
Working with ChatGPT was straightforward. Its iterative approach, aided by the file import feature, allowed for a dynamic back-and-forth. I'd start with a high-level idea, and through each interaction, delve deeper into the specifics. It was less about relying on ChatGPT's "intelligence" and more about harnessing its utility to expedite the planning process.
Challenges Along the Way
While AI facilitated certain parts of the project, it wasn't a magic bullet. One unexpected challenge was writing data to a fillable PDF. A seemingly simple task became a drawn-out affair, ultimately requiring a shift to a paid library. As chatGPT is only knowledgeable as of a few years ago I got stuck in a loop where it kept bouncing between 2 solutions neither of which were appropriate for my specific use case. It was a stark reminder that while AI can be an asset, it doesn't replace the intricacies of hands-on development.
The Road Ahead
The core of my game hinges on AI, showcasing its potential in enhancing user engagement. The journey has been enlightening, offering insights into the balance between AI-driven automation and manual development. Whether the project sees completion or not, the experience has underscored the practical benefits of integrating AI tools in the development process.
Closing Thoughts
Embracing AI tools like ChatGPT doesn't mean being in awe of them. It's about recognizing their utility and incorporating them where they add value. As I navigate the challenges of this and other projects, AI stands as a pragmatic tool in my toolkit, ready to assist but not overshadow the human touch.
đź’ˇ Tips & Tricks: Mastering AI Today
Flowise!: Check out the Flowise github here, if you want to make your own chatGPT but add a bunch of features, take a look. It is a little technical but is pretty much a no code solution. If you are looking to build your own chatbot to query your own data, completely offline, Flowise is probably the easier route to take atm.
Midjourney: There are a number of really cool image generators to check out however, Midjourney, found here, is still my favorite and go to currently.
3D Characters in YOUR Videos?!: Now this is an interesting and exciting one. While it is far from perfect, still need that VFX artist!, you can upload a video clip, click on a person in that video, click on a cool fully CG character, then just sit back and relax. In a short time it will process and give you a video with everything done. It is pretty amazing and even allows you to export the full scene in blender, 3d track, clean plate used, pretty much all you need to rebuild it nicely if you so choose. Check it out here, it is pretty amazing.
